Columbia River Gorge, OR - 2002 (Re-run)

Long one of my favorite places to visit, this area is arguably one of the prettiest spots in the country.  Not only does it have the gorgeous scenery of northwest forests, but the number of spectacular waterfalls is almost beyond comprehension.  Having dear friends who live above the gorge is a bonus that includes sunset views from their deck.

Here are just a few of the waterfalls along the south shore of the Columbia, all within a short drive of each other.  Many more can be accessed via short hikes, and even more are located on the north side of the river in Washington.

The Crown Point Overlook as seen looking east during sunset, high above the mighty river.

The Deschutes River, a major tributary of the Columbia, has its own share of rapids and waterfalls.  Designated a "wild and scenic" river, it is a fisherman's paradise.  Only Native Americans are allowed to net the salmon as they come over the falls.

The strong winds that sweep down the Columbia's gorge have made it a mecca for windsurfing and kite-boarding.

Another tributary, the Klickitat River, also has some impressive waterfalls.  It, too, attracts fishermen from all over and is also a "wild and scenic" river.

Mount Hood is the highest point in Oregon and a major ski resort that can be viewed from so many places in this general area.  My favorite viewpoint is from Trillium Lake.

Although I've never been a fan of the political side of Portland, I have to admit there are several "must see" attractions in the city.  The famous Rose Gardens and Japanese Gardens immediately come to mind.
