Anacortes, WA , Part 4- June 28-30, 2007 (Re-run)

While staying in Anacortes, we took the opportunity to visit other areas on day trips.  One of those trips was to the Mount Baker Wilderness, the snowiest place in America.  There we saw the beautiful Nooksack Falls, picturesque Mount Shuksan and lots of snow hanging around.

On another day, we visited the town of La Conner, right across the channel from Hidalgo Island and the Swinomish Indian Reservation.  This touristy town is also adjacent to the Skagit Valley, the largest tulip growing region in the world and host to the annual tulip festival each April.

Our final day was spent touring the waterfront area of Seattle, including Pike Place Market.  In operation since 1907, it is one of the longest continuously active farmers' markets in the U.S.  Known for its fresh seafood, the market has become famous for fish being thrown around by the people who sell them.  We also explored the Ballard Locks, which separate two fresh water lakes from Puget Sound and allow boat traffic between the bodies of water.  The lakes are twenty-six feet higher than the sound, so fresh water is used to operate the locks and raise or lower boats.
