Zion National Park - September 3-9, 2004 (Re-run)

The main canyon and the road through Zion present some of the most incredible sandstone formations you are likely to see.  In fact, Highway 9 from end to end is one of the most spectacular roads found anywhere.  The mountains and other formations in the park all have names, but I don't remember them all and names aren't necessary to enjoy them.

On the east side of the park is a mile long tunnel through the mountain.  Just beyond the tunnel, a trail leads to some nice observation points above the canyon.  You can look down and see one of the many slot canyons in Zion.  We could hear voices of canyoneers going through, so looked down and could barely see them.  Look at the center of the photo to spot the canyoneers.  There is also a good view of Highway 9 as it descends into the canyon.  We could even see one of the windows cut into the tunnel wall, presumably to permit air to enter.

Although stopping in the tunnel is against the rules, on this day we were alone in there, so we stopped for several photos with special viewpoints.

The main canyon was carved by the Virgin River.  Normally just a scenic part of the canyon, the river does occasionally flood and cause damage.  A footbridge over the river leads to several trailheads.

A three mile round trip hike leads to the three Emerald Pools, fed by a creek that flows from the rim of the canyon.  At the time of this trip, there wasn't much water in the creek, but the pools were still pretty and made some good reflections.
