Ouray, CO - July 1, 2005 (Re-run)

Ouray is a charming little village nestled in the beautiful San Juan Mountains.  Founded in 1875 as a mining town, it once had some 30 mines and many others nearby.  Now it is strictly a tourist town with a permanent population just over 1000.  Because of its topography and climate, Ouray calls itself the Switzerland of America.  It attracts people for hiking, off-roading and Winter sports (not skiing), including ice climbing.  The section of Highway 550 known as the "Million Dollar Highway" starts here and goes over the infamous Red Mountain Pass.

The drive over Red Mountain Pass is one of the most scenic in America, topping out at just over 11,000 feet.  In order for snow plows to operate and push snow off the road, much of it is without guard rails, despite its many tight switchbacks.  With more than 12 feet of snow each year, avalanches are a constant threat during Winter.  In Summer, wildflowers are profuse, while Fall provides glorious colors.  Streams, lakes and waterfalls add to the beauty.
