Sedona, Arizona, Part 2 - February 6, 2006 (Re-run)

The Verde Canyon Railroad actually begins in the nearby town of Clarkdale, a charming town of less than 5000 people that sits at the foot of Verde Canyon.  The Verde River runs through town.  Clarkdale was founded in 1912 with the construction of a smelter to service area mines, and a railroad opened at the same time to transport ore.  The mines played out in the 1950s, leaving the railroad with no purpose.  However, in 1990 the railroad was resurrected as a scenic attraction for tourists.  It runs through the spectacular Verde Canyon to the town of Perkinsville, then reverses course and returns to Clarkdale.

The four hour trip through the canyon is described by railroad posters as a trip to a simpler, more leisurely time away from the distractions and annoyances of our modern world.  The railroad and surrounding area was a filming location for How The West Was Won, which I've noted before is one of my all-time favorite movies.
