Northern Arizona & Kanab, Utah - March 1-6, 2007 (Re-run)

 Medical Update

I'm still doing well, feeling good and staying somewhat active.  Tomorrow (5/23) I go to Tucson for a sigmoidoscopy, and on 5/31 I'm scheduled for a "pressure test" to confirm that my previous surgery has healed sufficiently to allow re-connection of my "plumbing".  That surgery has been tentatively scheduled for June 29, contingent upon positive results of the two tests.

Given the medical procedures scheduled throughout the summer, It's clear that I will not be doing any extensive travel this year.  Accordingly, I've decided to post more "re-runs" from past travels.  As always, anyone who prefers not to receive e-mails announcing new posts, just let me know.

We left Florida in February, headed west once again.   The year 2007 was a particularly good one for us, because we enjoyed sharing some of our favorite places with various family members who joined us along the way.  After a few non-eventful stops, we arrived in Winslow on March 1, staying just long enough to visit the Whispering Ghost there, a statue created by Peter Toth to honor the Native Americans in that region.  You may recall other such statues from earlier travelogue posts.

Later that day, we reached Tuba City and immediately went to Coal Mine Canyon, one of my all-time favorites.  My plan was to hike down into the canyon for a different perspective.  Unfortunately, we learned that a flood had washed away the trail that went into the canyon.  We could see a nice trail in the floor of the canyon, but had no safe way to get there.

We next stopped in Kanab, Utah, where we spent two weeks.  As we always do when in that area, we paid a visit to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, one of the first "no kill" shelters in the country.

The sanctuary is located in Angel Canyon, where there is lots of room for expansion and some good scenery, too.  The pet cemetery is one of the highlights for me. People from all over the country send the cremains of their faithful pets to be interred here.
