Challis is a small town of around 1000 people, the largest town in its county, where farms and ranches are pretty much a way of life. The population has been dropping in recent years, possibly because two major earthquakes have hit the area this century. Our reason for visiting Challis was to drive the Salmon River Scenic Byway that runs from Challis to the town of Salmon, some sixty miles to the north. The highway follows the river much of the way, offering many great views of the "River of No Return" and the surrounding lands.
