Gunnison, Colorado & Vicinity, Part 2 - August 19-22, 2007 (Re-run)

While there are many beautiful modern homes around Crested Butte, the main part of the town has been preserved much as it was in the 19th century.  It's Victorian architecture is both colorful and timeless.  The primary mode of transportation for locals is the bicycle.  In fact, townspeople collect and repair old bicycles and leave them around town for anyone to use.  Just drop it at your destination for someone else to "borrow".

Lake Irwin marks the beginning of scenic Kebler Pass, claimed to be the world's largest aspen grove, spectacular in the fall.  Lost Lake, great for fishing, is but a short drive from the main road over the pass.  In another direction, two "semi ghost towns" beckon visitors to stop a while. Ohio City and Pitkin both date to the 1860s, when gold was discovered.  Mining has long since played out, but a few people hang on, enjoying the beauty and solitude of the area.  Cumberland Pass is a scenic drive the reaches 12,000 feet elevation on the way to Tin Cup, another near ghost town with only a few inhabitants.
