We cut short our trip on the Alpine Loop as it was getting late in the day, taking just enough time for a quick tour of Silverton. This little mountain town will always be one of my favorite places to visit, so many good memories there. Not far out of town, we took the rough trail up to Clear Lake, one of those idyllic spots in the San Juan Mountains.
The next day, a cold rain set in, but we persisted in taking the ride over Black Bear Pass that had been scheduled. This pass is the highest rated on the scale of difficulty and danger, and the rain didn't make it any easier or safer. We didn't drive ourselves, but took a ride with an experienced driver. Sitting on an open truck with a poncho and wool blanket, we suffered cold and wet conditions much of the day. However, the scenery and excitement made it all worthwhile.
