New Mexico - June 16-17, 2005 (Re-run)

On our way to Colorado, there were a couple places in NM that looked interesting, but which we had never visited.  The first stop was Capulin Volcano National Monument, a 60,000 year old cinder cone with a road to the top and several hiking trails.  I took the hike around the rim of the crater, then walked into the crater itself, which is about 400 feet deep.  I've been to the top of volcanic cones before, but this was my first time inside one.

Sugarite Canyon State Park is located near the border with CO, on the edge of the 8000 square mile volcano field.  The park was established to display a coal mine from the early 20th century, but it also offers ponderosa pine forest, a stream, two lakes and a wide range of wildlife.
