After a brief trip back to our home base in Florida, we set off again, heading west this time. Arriving in Texas, we decided to visit a few places that were new to us, plus a couple old favorites. Caprock Canyons State Park was our first stop. Located in the high plains of the Texas Panhandle, the geography and geology here is much different than the larger part of Texas to the south. The area is home to plains bison, colorful cliffs and canyons and exotic plants and wildlife.
The city of Amarillo is right on Interstate 40, so we have driven through it quite a few times. We always try to stay at least one night there, to visit the Big Texan restaurant, home of the 72 ounce steak dinner. If you can eat it all in one hour, it is free! Even I couldn't do that, but some people (even women) have accomplished the feat. Those who attempt it are given a prominent table on a stage so other customers can monitor their progress.
One of the main attractions near Amarillo is called Cadillac Ranch. Here the owner has "planted" old Cadillacs and local artists have spray painted to their hearts' content.
Famous for quarter horses and longhorn cattle, the town proudly displays fiberglass statues of both, each having a custom paint job.
