Reaching the top of Long Canyon puts one near Dead Horse Point State Park and the Island In The Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, both of which have incredible scenery and great hiking trails. Having visited both in the past, we didn't spend a lot of time on the sights we had seen before. One of the main things on our to-do list was to drive the notorious Shafer Trail, a steep, narrow, twisting road that leads off the plateau and back to Moab, several thousand feet below. I learned the most dangerous aspect to this trail is going down without 4WD to help slow the descent. Using the brakes is necessary to maintain control, but can lead to brake fade and be life threatening.
