Anacortes, WA , Part 1- June 21 thru 26, 2007 (Re-run)

Anacortes is a small city, around 18,000 people currently, located on Fidalgo Island in Puget Sound.  Since we had previously enjoyed this area, we were happy to welcome family members to show them around the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

While Fidalgo Island itself is quite small, it provides easy access to Whidbey Island via the Deception Pass Bridge, as well as the San Juan Islands and Victoria, British Columbia via the Washington State Ferry System.  It is also close enough to the Northern Cascade Mountains for day trips to places like Mount Baker, a volcano that tops out at 10,786 feet.  The Mt. Baker Ski Resort holds the world record for most snow recorded in a single season, 95 feet.

In the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, this area gets about 21 inches of rain each year, half the Seattle total, but plenty to support a healthy agricultural economy and produce spectacular wildflowers.  Needless to say, it is also one of the most active boating communities in the country.
