As mentioned earlier, there are quite a few alpine lakes in the mountains around Leavenworth, with the highest ones known as the Enchantments. A trail through the Enchantments offers several alternatives, all difficult. There is a seven mile version that gains 4500 feet of elevation, but only passes one lake. An eighteen mile trail can be done as a day hike, if the hiker is very capable, or as an overnighter, if the hiker has a campsite reserved. We weren't up for any of those choices, so we just drove around in the forest, seeing a few lower lakes. That was enough for us.
To reach our next destination meant driving over the notorious Stevens Pass. While this pass is relatively low (about 4100 feet), there have been many deaths there resulting from avalanches in the winter. We didn't have the worry of a possible avalanche, so we could just enjoy the beauty of the place.
