Whidbey Island is the largest island in Washington, some 37 miles long and from 1.5 to 10 miles wide. Thirty miles north of Seattle, it sits at the mouth of Puget Sound, which explains why it is the home of two old forts built to protect that area during war time. Major fortifications are also found across Puget Sound. Whidbey Island is largely agricultural, but also has an active fishing industry based in several small villages, such as Oak Harbor and Coupeville. Some of the best seafood I've ever eaten was from restaurants here. There are great views of the Olympic Mountains to the west and Mount Baker to the east.
