Northern Nevada, Part 2 - May 6 thru 14, 2007 (Re-run)

Everyone knows about Reno, "The Biggest Little City in the World". The city is famous for gambling, quick and easy marriages and (in the past) quick and easy divorces.  It is the third largest city in Nevada, but the metropolitan area (including the cities of Sparks, Carson City, Virginia City and others) is second largest.  Tourism is a big part of a diverse economy, with Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains the main attractions.

The Truckee River flows out of Lake Tahoe and winds through Reno on its way to Pyramid Lake, providing great recreational opportunities for the residents.  A special activity on the river is kayaking, and many competitive events are held there each year.

Nearby Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the U.S. and second deepest after Crater Lake.  Since it straddles the Nevada-California border, it is a colossal tourist attraction for both states.  Winter and summer recreation are the big draws, but many come just to enjoy the scenery.  Of course, casinos add to the allure of the Nevada side.
