San Rafael Swell Again, Part 3 - April 25 & 26, 2007 (Re-run)

The Green River, a tributary to the Colorado, is famous as the start of the Powell explorations in the 1860s-1870s.  Running through San Rafael Swell, it may be thought of as the lifeblood of the region.  We traveled along the river, seeking archeological artifacts and nice scenery.  I think we were successful, finding an old cabin, lots of pictographs and awesome scenery.

The swinging bridge over the San Rafael River was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.  The river, a tributary of the Green River, does not always have water.

These pictographs are at least 1000 years old, put there by the Barrier Canyon culture.

The spectacular Grand Canyon of Utah attracts a lot of dry-campers (those who don't require hook-ups).  I'm sure there are great hikes around there, but we stayed only a couple hours.
